Gigantic bridges join Sinai and Nile Valley
Egypt, Economics, 5/24/2001
Two great projects are going to be inaugurated by next October. Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak will open the high suspending Suez Canal bridge that will connect the two banks of the canal. It will allow 4500 vehicles to cross at a speed of about 80 km per hour. By 2017 the number will rise up to 28000 vehicles crossing the bridge.
The president is also going to open the Ferdan railway bridge that will allow trains cross the Suez Canal. It can be used, as well, to pass vehicles. Besides Ahmed Hamdy Tunnel, the two new bridges would be fresh veins for granting life to the land of Sinai peninsula.
The Ferdan bridge is one of the unique engineering facilities at the world level, as to the designing and the technology used. The bridge will have two 'wings' or parts: one on the eastern bank of the S.C. extending for 170 m, the other on the western bank extending for 150 m. The middle part will rise high for 60 m over the S.C. navigation stream.
While the Ferdan bridge will be operated by the 'open-close' method, the second will be a fixed one. The Suez Canal bridge will stand high enough; for about 80 m over the canal to allow the passage of ships and containers whatever tall they are. That giant project is the fruit of the Egyptian-Japanese cooperation.
Those two big projects will contribute in inhabiting more than 3 million people in Sinai plus reclaiming and cultivating about 500 thousand feddans, using the water of the 'Assalam' (peace) irrigation canal. Investments are expected to rush actively to Sinai soon after the two bridges are practically operated.
