NDP: landslide victory in Shura Council elections
Egypt, Politics, 5/24/2001

The Egyptian Ministry of Interior announced on Wednesday results of the first round of the mid-term Shura Council run-off elections. The National Democratic Party overwhelmingly won the majority of the 19 seats for which 38 candidates in 12 constituencies vied in five governorates.

This makes the total seats gained by the NDP so far 25 out of the thirty competed for. The NDP garnered 14 seats, while the independents landed five seats.

The results show in an unequivocal way the absence of real competitiveness from the opposition. The turnout was obviously meager, a matter that accentuated the lukewarm involvement of the voters.

At the security level, the elections were held in a calm atmosphere without any disturbances reported.

The judicial supervision of the process has further assured the neutral performance, with security men outside the polling stations keeping any riots or intimidations for the voters at bay.
