Ebeid receives first Sudanese vice president
Egypt-Sudan, Politics, 5/24/2001
Egyptian Prime Minister Atef Ebeid Tuesday received first Sudanese Vice President Ali Othman Taha, who leads his country's delegation in the 6th Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA).
Emerging from the meeting, Ebeid said that discussions dealt with carrying out what was agreed upon between President Hosni Mubarak and his Sudanese counter part Omar Al-Bashir during their recent meeting in Cairo on furthering cooperation in the economic, trade and investment fields.
"The higher Egyptian-Sudanese committee is to wind up meetings in Khartoum late next June in implementation of President Mubarak directives in this respect", said Ebeid.
"Meantime, Sudanese Minister of Industry Galal Al-Doqeir agreed with Minister of Economy and Foreign Trade Youssef Boutros Ghali on classifying the Sudanese commodities into three categories: the first comprises high-revenue items like sugar, gas and aerated water, the second fledgling industries like textiles and the third comprises cotton and leather industries, in which Sudan enjoys relative privileges", said the source.
"The two ministers agreed on accession into Egypt without customs duties by Sudanese commodities such as sesame, watermelon seeds, glue beans, dates and cotton, he added, noting frozen meat will be exempted from customs duties.
"The file of the Sudanese debts, due for Egypt, will be separated from that of COMESA so that debts would not affect the movement of commodities, he said. Means to repay the debts will be discussed during the Egyptian economy minister's visit to Khartoum next July," remarked the source.
