Andalusian government plans large joint venture with Moroccan fishing operators
Morocco-Spain, Economics, 5/24/2001
The autonomous government of Andalusia is planning to set up a joint venture between Moroccan and Spanish fishing operators to open the way for the return of its traditional fishing fleet to Moroccan waters.
A local official, who presented to reporters an alternative fishing plan after the failure of negotiations between Morocco and the European Union over a new fisheries agreement, said experts have been asked to study the legal feasibility of the project. However, he explained that the project still depends on amendments of fishing norms set up by the EU.
The project is very important for the local government of Andalusia although no direct negotiation is being held with Morocco, but mere contacts, he said.
He went on the alternative plan would cost 50 billion pesetas, of which 75% should be brought by the EU and the rest by the central and regional governments of Spain.
