King Mohammed ends official visit to Senegal
Morocco-Senegal, Politics, 5/24/2001

Morocco's King Mohammed VI wound up on Wednesday his two-day official visit to Senegal where he met with Senegalese president Abdoulaye Wade.

On Wednesday, the king toured the slave house on Goree Island, three km from Dakar. Accompanied by his sister, Princess Lalla Hasna, the Senegalese president and his spouse, Mrs. Viviane Wade, the king was briefed by the curator of the facility on the history of the slave trade. The house, which has been proclaimed in 1978 part of the world human legacy, is said to have sheltered over 20 million Africans before they were sailed as slaves to Europe and the Americas.

The king then visited the Dakar Grand mosque which was inaugurated by the late King Hassan II in 1964. The king donated the Imam of the mosque a batch of the Koran and performed prayers in the shrine.

On the same day, the king met in his residence in Dakar a group of the Soufi Tarika (confraternity) and Senegalese Islamic scholars.

A group of Moroccan nationals living in Senegal also had the honor to meet the king who granted distinctions to several outstanding figures working in business, international organizations, medicine, education and other sectors.

The king, who arrived in Senegal on Tuesday on his first official visit to a sub-Saharan country, was given a red-carpet welcome both at the airport where he was received by the Senegalese president and in Dakar where the official cortege was received by the cheers of Senegalese citizens and Senegal-settled Moroccans who lined up along the city's avenues to welcome the king.
