Damascus threatens to sever relations with Mauritania
Syria-Mauritania, Politics, 5/24/2001
Damascus threatened to cut diplomatic relations with Nouakchott in case it continues to " defy the Arab will and to violate the decisions of the Arab league, which call for cutting relations with Israel because of its aggression against the Palestinian people."
In Ramullah, the Palestinian Authority on Wednesday expressed strong anger over the visit of Wild Abdi to Israel and called on the Arab League to take a position towards Mauritania.
The Palestinian minister of culture and information Yasser Abd Rabbu said in a press conference he held in al-Beera on Wednesday "we feel angry over the visit of the Mauritania's foreign minister." He added " we think the AL should take a position towards Mauritania's membership in it."
However, the secretary general of the Arab league Amr Moussa considered on Wednesday Abdi's visit just three days as from the call advocated by the AL to halt all contacts with Israel as does not " violate the Arab consensus" rather the abnormal thing in the Arab consensus."
In Jerusalem, the Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon expressed his " great happiness for receiving the Mauritanian ministers." Sharon told journalists during his meeting with Wild Abdi in his office inside the parliament " we are very happy for receiving Mauritania's representative for which we owe great estimation." He added that Israel is very keen to strengthen cooperation relations existed at the meantime with Mauritania."
