A call to re-license forums
Syria, Politics, 5/24/2001

The official spokesman for Jamal al-Attasi forum for democratic dialogue lawyer Habib Issa has called on the Syrian minister of labor and social affairs Bareia al-Qudsi to reconsider the rules which regulate the work of societies and forums and the establishments of the civil society.

In a statement to the Kuwaiti daily al-Rai al-Am issued on Wednesday, Issa denied news that any official or security side in the country had contacted his Forum since he had received the decision of the ministry of social affairs and labor to reject the licensing request.

Issa added that the ministry has no right to refuse licensing his cultural forum under the pretext that this is not the ministry's specialty, because this ministry had supervised the work of all forums and societies during the 1950 s and the 1960s of the last century.
