Morocco, Korea sign accords on IT
Morocco-South Korea, Economics, 5/22/2001

Morocco and South Korea signed in Rabat Monday two accords on global cooperation programs in matters of new information and communication technologies.

The first accord, initialed by Moroccan secretary of state in charge of posts and telecommunications and information technologies, Nasr Hajji, and South Korean deputy minister of information and telecommunications, Kim Dong-Sun, provides for the promotion of cooperation and exchange of expertise in matters of information, telecommunication and communication policies, regulations and research.

It also provides for the holding of exhibitions, workshops and forums on new information technologies and for the setting up of a committee that will follow up cooperation activities between the two sides.

The second accord, between the operators Maroc-Telecom and Korea-Telecom, deals with a cooperation program based on the exchange of information and expertise in new IT.

The accords were signed on the sidelines of a Moroccan-Korean forum of information and telecommunications technologies held in Rabat at the initiative of the Korean ministry of information and telecommunications and the Moroccan secretariat of state in charge of posts and information and telecommunications technologies.

Several Korean enterprises and institutions are taking part in this forum, namely Korea Telecom, LG Electronics, Hyndai Information Technology, Handysoft Corporation, Eagle Tech, the Korean Agency for the promotion of the Industry of IT, the National Computerization Agency, the Korean Agency for the promotion of commercial investments as well as Korean companies operating in Morocco.

On the Moroccan side, senior officials from the ministerial departments in charge of information and telecommunication systems, as well as private enterprises, researchers and national institutions working in the field of information and telecommunications technologies are participating in the event.

In an opening address at the forum, Nacer Hajji called for closer cooperation between Moroccan and Korean enterprises and expounded the strategy adopted by Morocco to promote new IT, saying the strategy involves both the public and private sectors.

The South Korean delegation, led by the deputy minister of information and telecommunications, is on a working visit to Morocco since last Thursday. The visit is mainly aimed at exploring partnership and co-operation opportunities between the operators of the two countries.
