Israeli vandalism in the occupied Arab Golan Heights
Syria-Israel, Politics, 5/21/2001
The Syrian Arab Republic prepared a memorandum, on the Israeli encroachment on the monumental sites in the occupied Arab Golan Heights, to be submitted to the Fifth Conference of the Arab Archaeologists.
The memo illustrates the background of the Golan Heights before the Israeli occupation in terms of archaeological diversity throughout different ages. It also reviews the Israeli vandalism in the occupied Golan Heights, listing the monumental sites damaged by the Israeli occupying forces.
It calls for the Arab states to shoulder their responsibilities for protecting these monumental sites. According to the memo, this can be achieved through taking decisive measures for facing Israeli aggression on the Arab cultural assets in the occupied Arab territories.
Additional measures that can be used include boycotting all Israeli as well as foreign archeological expeditions in the occupied Arab lands, calling on competent international organizations to exert their best efforts to restore Arab stolen monuments. An international campaign canbe staged for rejecting and preventing Israel from such aggressive practices as well as isolating it from participating in relevant international events and conferences . The memo also called for forming a special follow up committee.
