Russia rejects US proposals on new Iraqi sanctions
Iraq-USA, Politics, 5/21/2001
The US has failed to convince Russia on Friday to support its proposals for imposing a new system of UN sanctions against Iraq.
News reports quoted the Russian foreign minister Igor Ivanov as saying on Friday that Russia has special proposals and that more talks will be held at the premises of the UN in New York.
Ivanov, who was talking in a press conference with his US counterpart Colin Powell said " we have discussed with great details the situation concerning the Iraqi case and the Americans gave their view points concerning this matter and we also have our proposals." He added: " our experts held two rounds of talks and negotiations or at least exchanging view points. He expressed his convictions will continue in New York.
Ivanov did not define the nature of differences between Russia and the US, but a high ranking Russian official said on Thursday that the western plan concerning Iraq was not accepted by Russia.
