Cairo to host pan-african forum on future of children
Regional, Culture, 5/19/2001
Cairo is to host a Pan-African Forum on the Future of Children from 28 to 31 May following President Hosni Mubarak's ratification on Thursday of the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child.
The charter was adopted by the Organization of African Unity (OAU) in Addis Ababa in July 1990 and was recently endorsed by the Egyptian People's Assembly (parliament) recently.
The four-day forum meetings are organized by the OAU and the UNICEF ahead of the United Nations General Assembly Special Session (UNGASS) in September 2001 in a bid to assess progress made since the First World Summit on Children in 1990.
In this vein, OAU Assistant Secretary General Lawrence Agubuzu mandated the OAU Secretariat to come up with a report on African position to submit to the UNGASS.
The Cairo forum seeks to develop an African position by urging OAU member-states to ratify the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child.
Another objective of the forum is after, is to provide an opportunity to create a dynamic movement across the African continent, an alliance of young people, wider constituencies, and a range of institutions dedicated to upgrade the conditions of children.
