Iraq, Local, 5/19/2001
Immigration authorities in two separate towns in the Indonesian Riau province have detained 19 Iraqis for illegal entry, Indonesian news agency ANTARA reported. During interrogations, the Iraqis had confessed they were on their way to Australia where they hoped to get resettled.
Some islands in the Riau archipelago such as Batam, Tanjung Pinang and Karimun are often chosen as transit points by illegal immigrants trying to reach Australia where they hope to get political asylum.
