Morocco-Portugal, Politics, 5/18/2001
Morocco and Portugal convened to give a new momentum to cooperation between their interior departments and to conduct joint actions to this end.
The decision was made during the two-day visit Moroccan minister of the interior, Ahmed El Midaoui, paid to Portugal May 16-17 at the invitation of his Portuguese peer, Nuno Severiano Teixeira.
A joint statement issued at the end of the visit said talks covered a set of issues of mutual concern, mainly emigration, emigrants trafficking via the sea, civilian rescue operations, electoral matters, and police action control.
The two sides agreed to draft an accord on residence permits on the basis of reciprocity and the entente marking relations between the two countries. The accord will be initialed in the course of the current year.
They also decided to coordinate action within the Mediterranean conference of interior ministers.
The two sides agreed to set up a follow-up group that will meet twice a year alternately in Morocco and Portugal. The group will assess bilateral cooperation between the two interior departments and make concrete proposals to give momentum to this cooperation. Other sectoral groups will also be set up to ponder mainly on cooperation in matters of police and civilian rescue operations.
