Moroccan parties call for international emergency moves to denounce Israel, back Palestinians
Morocco-Palestine, Politics, 5/18/2001

Four Moroccan parties have called for emergency initiatives at the international scale and at the level of the Organization of Islamic Organization and the Arab League to condemn the Israeli crimes against the Palestinian people.

The call came in a statement issued in Rabat Thursday at the end of a rally held by four Moroccan parties forming the Democratic Koutla (Arabic word for bloc) to voice backing to the Palestinian people and the Palestinian national authority, on the occasion of the 53rd anniversary of the Nakba.

The Socialist Union of Popular Forces (USFP), the Istiqlal Party (PI), the Party for Progress and Socialism (PPS) and the Organization for Democratic and Popular Action (OADP) called for further material and moral backing to the Palestinian people to put an end to daily slaughters in the occupied territories and to the repeated attempts to Islam's sacred values and to compel Israel withdraw from the territories occupied since 1967.

The Koutla parties called for the return of Palestinian refugees to their homeland and for suing Zionist war criminals. They also urged Arab and Islamic states to cement ranks and get mobilized materially and politically to help the Palestinian people recover their legitimate rights.

The statement stigmatized the unconditional backing of the

United States to Israeli aggressions and denounced the stand of most western powers which put on equal footing the victim and the assailant.

The Koutla parties also voiced pride at the unfailing backing extended by Morocco, its king, government and people to the Palestinian people in their struggle against Israel's arrogance.

The leaders of the four parties, namely USFP first secretary, Abderrahmane Youssoufi, IP secretary general, Abbas El Fassi, PPS secretary general, Ismail Alaoui, and OADP secretary general, Mohamed Bensaid Ait Idder, successively took the floor during the rally to denounce the horrible crimes perpetrated by Israel that they described as crimes against humankind, deplore the international community's passivity and call Arab and Islamic countries to extend substantial financial assistance to the Palestinian people.

Three of these four parties, namely the USFP, the PI and the PPS, are participating in the Moroccan coalition government.

Three Moroccan opposition parties gathered in another bloc "Wifaq" had released last Tuesday a statement calling Arab and Islamic governments to shoulder their "historic responsibility" and appealing for an international protection to the Palestinian people, prey to the "barbarous war" waged by Israel.

The Constitutional union (UC), the Popular movement (MP) and the Democrat National Party (PND) urged the governments of the free world to "intervene to compel Israel stop the slaughters and lift the closure of the Palestinian territories," and to enable Palestinian refugees return to their homeland.

The Wifaq parties vehemently condemned the liquidation policy pursued by the government of Ariel Sharon, "the butcher of Sabra and Chatila," and renewed total and unconditional backing to the struggle of the Palestinian people to recover their legitimate rights and establish an independent state with Al-Quds as its capital.

The three parties equally called for Israel's withdrawal from southern Lebanon and from the Golan heights in a bid to establish a fair, lasting peace in the region.

The Moroccan media are devoting daily comments to the events taking place in the occupied territories, denouncing the Israeli barbarous crimes and calling the international community to foil the Israeli plans to liquidate the Palestinian people and to take firmer stands against the Zionist policy.
