Kuwaiti parliamentary delegation renews backing to Morocco's territorial unity
Morocco-Kuwait, Politics, 5/17/2001
A delegation from the Kuwaiti Umma council (senate), led by chairman of the foreign affairs committee, Mohamed Jassem Sakr, renewed Kuwait's backing to Morocco's territorial unity.
The delegation members who started their visit to Morocco Monday said at a press briefing in Rabat Wednesday that Kuwait had repeatedly voiced this backing to Morocco's territorial unity in various international forums, and especially within the international parliamentary union (IPU).
They said they conferred with several Moroccan officials and MPs on issues of mutual concern, such as the Palestinian cause, the situation in the Middle East and the situation in the Arab Maghreb.
They called in this respect for seeking a settlement to the pending issue in the Arab Maghreb in a climate of understanding and stability in a bid to reactivate the Arab Maghreb Union (UMA).
The UMA that was set up in Marrakesh in 1989 by Algeria, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco and Tunisia, is paralyzed due to strained relations between some member countries, and especially between Morocco and Algeria over Algiers' direct involvement in the Sahara issue.
The Kuwaiti parliamentary delegation hailed both Morocco and Kuwait for their backing to the Palestinian cause and to the Palestinian people's right to establish an independent state with Al-Quds (Jerusalem) as its capital, and denounced the Israeli raids and aggressions against the unarmed Palestinian people.
They also called for settling all the disputes crippling the unity of the Arab-Islamic nation.
Talks with Moroccan officials and MPs focused on the two countries parliamentary and democratic experience and on ways to enhance cooperation between the two parliaments.
The Kuwaiti delegation had paid similar visits to Syria, Tunisia and Jordan.
