Kuwait denies Arab initiatives to normalize relations with Iraq
Kuwait-Iraq, Politics, 5/17/2001

The Kuwaiti first deputy prime minister and the foreign minister Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah has denied in a press statement on Wednesday the existence of any Arab initiative or non- Arab one to normalize relations between Kuwait and Iraq.

In a statement issued in the Kuwaiti daily al-Seyasah on what has been rumored about a Syrian- Egyptian initiative to this effect:" we do not know about what is said about this initiative." He added that there is no Kuwaiti intention to meet with the Iraqi regime as far as it ( Iraq) refuses to implement UN resolutions, especially the question of the Kuwaiti missing and prisoners held in Iraq.

On Tuesday, the Qatari daily al-Watan said that Syria and Egypt are studying proposing a joint initiative to normalize relations between Iraq and the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council in general and Kuwait, in particular.
