Morocco, a bridge between Africa and Europe, Ghana's president
Morocco-Ghana, Politics, 5/16/2001
President of Ghana John Kufuor hailed the keen interest King Mohammed VI grants to the consolidation of cooperation between Morocco and Africa and the role it plays as "a natural bridge" between Africa and Europe.
President Kufuor, who was delivering an address at an exchange of toasts during the official dinner banquet hosted Tuesday evening in Agadir in his honor by King Mohammed VI, underlined the kingdom's "privileged" place in the continent and said it is "a natural bridge between Europe and the rest of the African continent," and can thus express "Africa's concerns to our development partners of the north."
After he hailed the socio-economic and political evolution in Morocco under the wise leadership of King Mohammed VI and the longstanding ties of friendship, solidarity and cooperation binding the two countries, President Kufuor said his visit to the kingdom evidences his country's desire to lay concrete bases to firm, lasting cooperation ties between the two countries.
In the frame of south-south cooperation, we are seeking ways and means of improving trade ties, promoting economic relations beyond our respective sub-regions, he said.
He said Africa is sparing no effort in its quest to eradicate sources of conflicts in the continent, elaborate strategies to settle the foreign debt problem, and work out programs to alleviate poverty and stop the propagation of diseases such as the AIDS pandemic.
President Kufuor, who started Tuesday a two-day official visit to Morocco at the invitation of King Mohammed VI, held separate talks with the speakers of the two houses of the Moroccan parliament, Abdelouahed Radi and Mustapha Oukacha. Besides bilateral relations, talks covered the situation in Africa and the Maghreb and ways of consolidating inter-African relations and tapping the continent's huge resources.
Kufuor is accompanied by a delegation including the ministers of foreign affairs, of tourism, of communication and of maritime fisheries. Several of his advisors, including national security advisor, are also of the party. His official visit will be followed by a two-day private visit.
