Morocco, Economics, 5/16/2001

Morocco's King Mohammed VI on Wednesday launched several social and economic projects in Agadir, including a university sports complex, a students house and a marina. The king heard explanations on the projects.

The sports complex to cost 9 million Dirhams (nearly $ 782,608) will be totally financed by the higher education department.

The facility will include a polyvalent hall and a stadium.

The students house will cost 10 million Dirhams (some $869,565). The house, to be built over 5 hectares, is meant to improve students accommodation and help students from poor families.

The king also heard explanations on a university center to be built next year in Ouarzazate (southern Morocco). Morocco plans to build similar centers in several cities part of a project to decentralize universities.

The Agadir marina project includes the refurbishing of the city sea resort, the construction of a 555-bed five-star hotel, a hotel compound including 300 suites and apartments, a 600-time sharing apartment compound, a large commercial center and a yacht club for sea sports.

The 1-billion dirham project will be carried out over eight hectares. It will be completed in a 36-month deadline and will generate 2800 jobs.

King Mohammed VI also heard explanations on a project to built a 154-million Dirham arts and handicraft village near Agadir. The village will be linked to the city port by cable-cars.
