US Smart sanctions are a failure
Iraq-Regional, Politics, 5/16/2001
"Deputy Prime Minister Tareq Aziz has underlined the failure of the so-called smart sanctions the U.S administration propagated as an expression of its political failure in marketing the unjust embargo imposed on Iraq," an Iraqi News Agency report said.
Aziz said that "Iraq would reject any agenda that would maintain the unjust embargo and regarded it as a form of new colonialism which Iraq rejects as it rejected the previous notorious Resolution 1284," saying "the final form of the U.S agenda of the so-called smart sanctions would be discussed in the Security Council session at the end of this month, pointing out that Iraq is holding talks with a number of permanent member states to expose this wicked agenda." the report said.
Aziz called on the Arab states adjacent to Iraq and Turkey not to succumb to the U.S pressures and attempts to impose the implementation of the so-called "smart sanctions" as this would cause damage to their national interests and economies.
Aziz says this new US effort is a trick that would try to shore up a failing sanctions regime.
