Egypt, Politics, 5/16/2001
Shura Council mid-term elections are due to kick off today under full judicial supervision.
The first stage elections will start in eight govern orates with 233 nominee in 22 constituencies.
Minister of Interior, Habib AL Adly said security forces will not interfere in the electoral process, as their duty is to protect the nominees, voters and judges as well as safeguard the ballot boxes till votes are sorted out.
Security departments were provided with computer diskettes that include the names of voters in order not to be repeated.
Adly hinted at the steadfast attitude of security forces in the face of hooliganism and provocation in the constituencies.
Voters in the Giza governorate will go to the polling stations today Wednesday to choose their representatives at the Shura Council mid-term elections.
Some 1.075 million voters will head for 293 stations in three election constituencies to choose four labor and white-collar representatives from 39 running candidates.
Giza Governor Counselor Mahmoud Abul Leil charged local units chiefs in the constituencies to follow up the election proceedings and set up a main operation room to work around the clock.
The State Council Administrative Court in a ruling on Tuesday turned down Minister of Manpower Ahmad El-Ammawi's candidacy for the Shura Council's seat of the Cairo downtown constituency of Al-Zaytoun.
The court argued that Ammawi occupies the post of a Minister and consequently should not run for elections as a worker but rather as (white-collar) candidate.
The court pointed out that Ammawi retired in 1992.
