Qatar is ready to host a summit between Sharon, Arafat

Qatar said on Tuesday it is ready to host a Palestinian- Israeli summit to help end the escalated violence in the West Bank and Gaza.

The Qatari news agency quoted the Qatari foreign minister Sheikh Hamad Bin Jasem Bin Jaber al-Thani as saying that Qatar's hosting to the meeting of the foreign ministers of the Organization of the Islamic Conference to discuss developments in the Palestinian territories came at the request of the ruler of Qatar Sheikh Khaleifa Bin Hamad al-Thani from the Palestinian President Yasser Arafat.

Qatar is currently presiding over the 9th OIC and called for convening an urgent meeting for the OIC foreign ministers on May 26 to discuss the Palestinian Intifada.

Sheikh Hamad said that Qatar will not oppose if the Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon will come to Doha, if his visit will help in stopping the fighting which claimed the life of 500 persons.

Sheikh Hamad implicitly referred that the Israeli trade office in Qatar is still open and practices its activities, stressing that this stems from " a well- known Qatari policy."

Sheikh Hamad was replying in a press conference to a question on Qatar's invitation to convene the conference for the OIC foreign ministers in order to discuss the brutal Israeli aggressions against the Palestinian people, while news reports were talking about the continued activities of the Israeli office in Doha.
