Al-Mahdi strongly criticizes Garang
Sudan, Politics, 5/15/2001

The leader of the Sudanese al-Ummah party al-Sadeq al- Mahdi has launched a strong attack against the rebellion movement led by John Garang. He said that this movement complies to the foreign pressure groups to continue its military operations in a way that it does not agree any sort of agreement and waiting for the time to impose its conditions on Sudan.

In a statement to the Sudanese daily al-Ayam issued on Monday, al-Mahdi added that Garang refused during the meeting held between the two of them in the presence of the Nigerian President in Abuja by the beginning of the current month three points relating to the comprehensive peaceful solution in Sudan which calls for a peace agreement and build on Asmara decisions of 1995, and of a democratic change which guarantees human rights, according to international charters, besides forming a pan national mechanism for negotiations and another one to follow up and implement what will be agreed upon.

Al-Mahdi explained that Garang tried to bargain by proposing the convening of another meeting in July through a joint committee between the rebellion movement and the al-Ummah party, saying that is a tactic from the movement because it is not serious to reach a political solution in the country.

On the other hand, the Sudanese al-Share' al-Seyasi daily on Monday quoted well-informed sources in the south that the rebellion movement reached through a committee it formed to investigate the striking of the ICRC plane by the end of last week that a " drunk man" from the movement's fighters opened fire at the plane, thinking it is a government plane.

The sources added that the rebellion movement will apologize for the ICRC after trying the soldier who opened fire at the plane.
