Egyptian -Libyan initiative proper for peaceful settlement in Sudan

Egyptian President Mubarak held a tete a tete session of talks with Sudanese President Omar Al Bashir, followed by an expanded meeting attended by members of the Egyptian and Sudanese delegations.

Egyptian Sudanese summit has taken a wide array of measures for deepening bilateral cooperation in the economic field and investment movement.

The two leaders agreed on upgrading the joint committee into a higher committee under the First Sudanese Vice President and the Egyptian Prime Minister.

An agreement was reached on the establishment of a mechanism at the ministerial level under the two states foreign ministers for following up its proceedings, and raising its report to the higher committee.

The two leaders hailed efforts by officials on both sides to draw up a general framework of a joint agricultural strategy and the agreement signed in the fields of industry and investment.

An agreement was reached on taking measures for facilitating the movement of individuals and commodities. It was decided that the committee would consider building roads between the two countries and cooperation in the fields of telecommunications, linking harbors and other projects for enhancing relations between the two countries.

The two leaders expressed their welcome to the establishment of the joint businessmen council; there are hopes that such a council would contribute to pushing forward the movement of commercial and investment movement between the two countries.

The two leaders agreed on reopening the Sudanese consulate in Aswan and the Egyptian consulate in Port Sudan and on opening Egyptian consulate section in Wadi Halfa.

The two leaders agreed on the formation of a joint committee for regulating issuance of entry visas.

At the level of efforts for establishing peace in southern Sudan, the two leaders asserted that the Egyptian- Libyan initiative represents the proper framework for unifying efforts and achieving peaceful settlement in the Sudan.

The summit was scheduled to be held in Cairo but was held in Sharm EL Sheikh because of the sand storm which swept Cairo and made it impossible for the aircraft of the sudanese leader to land at Cairo airport.

President Mubarak topped dignitaries who were on hand to welcome the Sudanese leader at the airport.

The summit talks started immediately after the arrival of the Sudanese leader followed by an expanded meeting attended by Prime Minister Atef Ebeid, and the ministers of defense, information, foreign affairs, the chief of the Presidential cabinet and senior officials.

On his part, the Sudanese leader expressed his appreciation of efforts by President Mubarak for supporting the Sudan at the regional and international level as well as on bilateral levels.
