Syrian interests office to be opened in Baghdad
Syria-Iraq, Politics, 5/14/2001

The London- based al-Sharq al-Awsat issued on Saturday quoted a well-informed Syrian source as saying that the branch of supervising the Syrian interests in Baghdad will start its activities officially within the few coming days.

The paper said that the Syrian diplomat Muhammad Hassan Tawab, who is a commissioned minister at the Syrian foreign ministry, will chair this branch and that an official decision was released to this effect and will arrive in Baghdad within few days to assume his mission.

The paper indicated that the opening of the Syrian branch in Baghdad comes after more than one year after opening the office of the Iraqi interests office in Damascus, which is chaired by the Iraqi diplomat Rifaat al-Ani.

The Syrian and Iraqi sides agreed in 2000 to open two offices in the two capitals and this will be made under the Algerian flag.
