Sudan, ICRC contacts over plane shooting incident
Sudan, Local, 5/14/2001

The International Committee of the red Cross said that it is making contacts with the Sudanese government and with the rebel movement to unveil the opening-fire incident against the relief plane since several days.

The spokeswoman for the ICRC Francois Komits explained in a statement to the Sudanese daily al-Rai al-Am on Saturday that the relief operation carried out by the ICRC in al-Khartoum, Joba, Malkal and Wao were not affected by the plane incident which resulted in killing the assistant of the pilot.

She added that the ICRC has only halted its air flights awaiting an understanding to the reasons which led to opening fire on the plane. She expressed her hope that the few coming days will remove vagueness concerning this incident.

She also stressed that the ICRC will not blame any side for the incident and it is careful to continue its work in Sudan for serving those in need.
