Al-Assad to visit Cairo
Egypt-Syria, Politics, 5/12/2001
News reports close to the Egyptian presidency said that President Bashar al-Assad will on Wednesday visit Cairo to hold talks with the Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on the condition in the Middle East.
The reports added that it is expected that President al-Assad's talks in Cairo will deal with the joint Egyptian- Jordanian initiative aiming at putting an end to the acts of violence between the Israelis and the Palestinians and resuming negotiations in order to reach a final settlement.
The reports continued that President Bashar al-Assad, during his visit to Madrid, expressed doubts for opportunities of the success of the initiative, considering that Israel does not really want to achieve peace with the Arabs and takes of this initiative a pretext to obstruct the peace process.
They added that Syria calls for consolidating the Arab position against Israel to force it accepting the principle of withdrawal from all territories occupied in 1967, noting that the Egyptian foreign minister Amr Moussa had visited Damascus by the end of April and held talks with President Bashar al-Assad on regional issues.
