Israeli fears of increased popularity of President Bashar al-Assad
Syria-Israel, Politics, 5/12/2001
The London- based al-Muharrir al-Arabi weekly said that Israel has conveyed to the US administration its fears from the accelerated popularity of the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in the Arab states, especially amid circles which are against the Israeli policies.
According to a source close to the US National Security Council, the Israelis built their fears to reports laid by official systems, especially the danger which the Syrian President has started to constitute.
The paper added that Tel Aviv had noted that certain Arabs have started to monitor their positions towards Israel, on the ground of the Syrian position, which is a new development that can be accepted on the ground that al-Assad is Israel's fierce enemy despite his continued confirmation that he follows his father's step to take peace as a strategic option.
The paper continued that Israelis see that President Bashar al-Assad has dedicated himself after ten months from assuming presidency in Syria as a Middle East leader who seizes several sensitive lines in the region.
According to the sources, the Israeli fears which were conveyed to Washington warned against using a certain policy to withstand the condition if the Syrian President will lead Arab alliances that threaten Israel's security.
