Mediterranean ministerial forum convenes 8th session in Tangiers
Regional, Politics, 5/11/2001

The Foreign ministers of the eleven Mediterranean countries, member of the Mediterranean forum, are meeting in the Moroccan northern city of Tangier this May 10-11 to debate the situation in the Middle East, security in the Mediterranean and regional integration.

The forum, made up of Algeria, Egypt, France, Greece, Italy, Malta, Morocco, Portugal, Spain, Tunisia and Turkey will also debate economic cooperation and investments, the gaps in the Mediterranean and means of promoting the Mediterranean heritage.

The participating delegations in this 8th session of the forum were guest to a dinner hosted in their honor Thursday evening by Moroccan minister of foreign affairs and cooperation, Mohamed Benaissa.

The Mediterranean forum, which held its first meeting in Alexandria, Egypt, in 1994, is an informal forum for consultation and dialogue between these Mediterranean countries. The limited number of its members and the absence of countries directly involved in the Middle East conflict make of it a think-tank of the Barcelona process which gathers the 15 members of the European union and 12 south Mediterranean countries.

The forum has so far held 7 ordinary sessions at the level of the foreign ministers since it was incepted in 1994 and held an extraordinary session in Tabarka, Tunisia, in July 1995.
