Moroccan-Portuguese high level meeting in Lisbon next week
Morocco-Portugal, Politics, 5/10/2001

A Moroccan-Portuguese high level meeting is scheduled to be held on May 15-16 in Lisbon under the co-chairmanship of the two countries' Prime Ministers, Abderrahmane Youssoufi, and Antonio Gutteres.

The meeting, the 6th of the kind, will assess bilateral cooperation and explore ways of energizing political, economic and cultural relations between the two countries.

The meeting will draw the balance sheet of the cooperation projects agreed upon during the 5th meeting held in Morocco in September 1999 and will highlight by the signing of several accords and conventions in the legal, telecommunication and handicraft realms.

The high level meeting, instituted by the treaty of friendship, cooperation and neighborliness binding Morocco and Portugal since May 1994, will explore ways of setting up mechanisms likely to upgrade economic and trade exchanges, deemed "very modest."

Actually, despite Portugal's breakthrough in the Moroccan market in 1999, when it held the first rank in terms of foreign private investments in the kingdom with 5 billion Dirhams (about $ 435 Million), less than 50 Portuguese enterprises are operating in Morocco and very few Moroccan enterprises are showing interest for the Portuguese market.

Portuguese business milieus say partnership opportunities do exist but are not tapped.
