Free trade pact heralds Arab common market
Morocco-Egypt, Politics, 5/10/2001

Moroccan Prime Minister Abdrrahman Youssoufi held a meeting with Foreign Minister Amr Moussa.

After the meeting, Moussa said the meeting dealt with bilateral relations and Tuesday's signing of a Free Trade Area (FIA) agreement between Jordan, Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia with the attendance of King Mohammad VI.

Youssoufi said the FTA agreement is considered a step forward on the road of setting up Arab common market.

Youssoufi added that he congratulated Moussa on his new post as Arab League Secretary General. Moussa will assume the new post on May 15.

"Arabs are pinning great hopes on Moussa to upgrade the Arab League." he said.

The Egyptian-Moroccan higher committee will convene in Morocco in Autumn under the co-chairmanship of King Mohammad and Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.

Meanwhile, Moussa held a meeting with his counterpart Mohammad Ben Eissa on Middle East scene and bilateral ties.

In statements following the meeting, Eissa said that talks with Moussa tackled the Agadir Declaration launched on Tuesday for free trade. The meeting also discussed the situation in the Maghreb area and Africa as well as relations with the European Union (EU) and an Egyptian-Moroccan cooperation committee to convene this Autumn.

Meantime, meetings of the Egyptian-Moroccan consultation and political coordination committee were held in Rabat late Wednesday, co-chaired by Moussa and Mohammad Ben Eissa.

In press statements, Egyptian Ambassador in Rabat Ahmed Fathallah said that the meetings tackled promoting bilateral relations, Arab and regional issues as well as ties with the European Union (EU).

"Talks showed that both countries shared identical viewpoints over all issues," said Fathallah. He added that trade exchange was doubled in year.

Meetings of the committee is part of preparations for meetings of a higher cooperation commission, led by Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and King Mohammad VI.
