Algeria, Politics, 5/10/2001

The Algerian foreign minister Abdul Aziz Balkhadem on Wednesday in Madrid refused a request made by the leaders of the European socialist parties to form an international committee for facts finding concerning the events taking place in al-Qabayel ( Tribes) area.

In a joint press conference with his Spanish counterpart Josip Pique, Balkhadem said:" Algeria refuses and will continue to do so in refusing any proposal interferes in its internal affairs." He added " It is an Algerian issue and the Algerians will decide about it through a fact- finding commission that discusses in all aspects of the problem and define responsibilities."

However, the 5th conference of the European Socialists party, currently held in Berlin on Tuesday condemned " the use of violence against the peaceful demonstration in al-Qabayel area. Stressing " that the Algerian regime is fully responsible" for these events.

In one of its decisions, the conference called on the European Union to support a request made by democrats in Algeria from the UN to form" an international fact- find commission on the responsible side for the massacres."
