On Eritrea and Ethiopia
Eritrea-Ethiopia, Politics, 5/10/2001

The UN Security Council in New York has expressed its concern over the restrictions imposed on the freedom of movement of the UN forces which observe the area separating between Eritrea and Ethiopia.

News reports said that the UN special representative briefed members of the council during a close- door meeting on Tuesday evening on the situation on the ground of the establishment of a provisional security zone on April 18.

Some 4200 troopers are being deployed on the area of joint borders between the two countries at a width of 25 Kms. The troopers are in charge of supervising cease- fire between the Eritrean and Ethiopian armies.

The US charge de affairs James Konigham, who presides the UN Security Council for this month said that the UN Security Council is critically concerned over that the UN does not now freely enjoy total freedom of movement.

Last week Eritrea stopped a UN logistic caravan while heading to the isolation area.

Konigham explained that members of the UN Security Council are very concerned about information on the imposition of huge number of Eritrea's militias in the isolation area.

However, the agreement signed between the two countries on December 12, 2000 in Algiers stated the return of civil administration to the isolation area as well as the Eritrean police and militias, which the Eritrean militias expelled by the Ethiopian forces from this area.

The UN representative at the UN said he will brief the ambassadors of Eritrea and Ethiopia about the UN security council concern.
