Mrs. Mubarak lauds Alexandria Library as Egypt's 'Fourth Pyramid'

The Egyptian First Lady Suzanne Mubarak said that Alexandria Library is a message of peace to the whole world.

She praised the library as a lighthouse and a crucible of cultures and civilizations and not a library in the ordinary sense. During a meeting with members of the League of Egyptian diplomats' wives held Tuesday at the Diplomatic Club.

She said that every Egyptian is proud of the library, which could be described as the "fourth pyramid."

She added that work in the coming junction would focus on combating illiteracy, paying attention to the mentally disabled and women's activities as well as consolidating the Reading for All Festival.

Mrs. Mubarak said that the process of developing the intellectual schools has started after conducting a comprehensive study and intensive training to improve the of those who work in the field of intellectual education.

She pointed out that the coming summer vacation would witness a plan to eliminate smoking and drug addiction within the framework of an international campaign, organized by the World Health Organization (WHO), to combat smoking.

Meantime, the national council for childhood and motherhood held a meeting late Tuesday under Mrs. Mubarak.

The council discussed mechanisms for putting into effect recommendations by the national conference on protecting juniors from drugs, held in April.

During the meeting, Mrs. Mubarak head of the council's technical consultative committee, underlined the importance of coordination between the ministries and agencies concerned to implement recommendations.

She reaffirmed the need for each and every official to play his part to protect Egyptians from the dangers of smoking and drug addiction.

In statements following the meeting, minister of information Safwat El-Sherif said that Mrs. Mubarak was keen to invite all ministries concerned as well as the Council's Secretary General to activate the previously released recommendations.

He added that the meeting tackled recommendations to the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Higher Education as well as decisions adopted to ban smoking in all educational institutions.

"Mrs. Mubarak will hold meetings with the council members on regular basis to get to know progress in the implementation of the different policies," said El Sherif.
