Al-Mahdi was surprised by Garang in Nigeria
Sudan, Politics, 5/8/2001

The Sudanese opposition nation party which is led by al-Sadeq al-Mahdi has stressed that it has settled its own options towards a comprehensive political solution by proceeding forward in continuing negotiations with the Sudanese government in order to achieve the national agenda.

A statement released by the party on Monday on the meeting between al-Sadeq al-Mahdi and John Garang, the leader of the rebel movement which was held in Abuja, Nigeria on Thursday that its position from the gathering of the opposition which takes Musawa' in Eritrea as a headquarters will not be changed, rather the party works to avail any opportunity in order to bring together the national public opinion to be united towards the comprehensive political solution in Sudan.

The statement described the call advocated by the rebellion movement of Garang for the nation's party to return back to gather the opposition as a desperate attempt to suspend the Party's march, already started after signing the "Nidaa al-Watan " ( the call of the homeland ) agreement with the Sudanese government.

The statement said that Abuja meeting between al- Mahdi and Garang has explained that the rebel movement is not ready to negotiate seriously nor to give up its special agenda and that it still commits to the military option.

The statement denied the claim made by the rebel movement that al- Mahdi had gone to Nigeria to meet with Garang. The statement explained that the leader of the nation's party went to Nigeria at an urgent invitation from the Nigerian President and was surprised to meet with Garang there.
