Syria-Spain, Politics, 5/4/2001
The BBC correspondent in Madrid said that Spain, at the time when inviting President Bashar al-Assad to visit Spain had extended an invitation to the Turkish prime minister Polent Acawid who starts on Thursday a visit to Spain that lasts for three days during which he will be meeting with the Spanish prime minister Jose Maria Aznar to discuss with him the economic crisis Ankara is facing at the meantime and to express the will of Ankara to implement the conditions set by the countries of the European Union, conditions that enable Turkey to join the European Union. The Turkish prime minister will also discuss with Aznar conditions in the Middle east region.
The correspondent added that the visit of President Bashar al-Assad to Syria comes at a time when Moroccan- Spanish relations are witnessing a deterioration due to the fact that Morocco did not approve conditions of the European Union to implement the sea fishing agreement. A matter which damaged the Spanish fishing sector.
The correspondent continued that the Spanish foreign minister Joseph Pique had explained to President Bashar al-Assad that Madrid pins great importance on this visit ( Bashar's visit) due to Syria's position and its importance regarding events taking place in the Middle East region.
Pique said that he backs the common idea rumored which says that war cannot be erupted in the Middle East without Egypt and at the same time a comprehensive peace in the region is not attainable without Syria.
The correspondent continued that the visit of President Bashar al-Assad to Spain comes at the invitation extended to him by the Andalusia heritage establishment on the occasion of organizing the exhibition entitled " the flourishing of the Umayyads " held at al-Zahraa city to the South of Spain.
