Lecture: The woman in the Arab history

The chairman of Aleppo antiquities Muhammad Qijjah on Monday evening at the Abu Rummanneh's Damascus Arab cultural center in Damascus under the titles of the " prominent role played by the woman in the Arab history." Several women members at the executive bureau at the general federation of women and officials concerned attended the meeting.

The lecturer highlighted several Arab women who had remarkable achievements in the cultural and literary and building areas.

He explained: " when talking about Arab history, the Islamic history immediately comes to mind. A history which spanned for 15 centuries, noting that the Arabs have been existed in Bilad al-Sham not only before Islam but also before Christianity and the were the makers of a thousand Ð years old civilization."

The researcher focused on prominent women throughout the Arab history and especially among them was Queen Zenobia of Palmyra ( the first century AD). He said that historical records proved that she is an Arab queen who sought her kingdom independence from the Roman Empire.

The researcher also focused on the Islamic era when great influence was touched for great women " the ladies of the prophet's house " ( Sayedat al-Beit al-Nabawi) noting that among these women was Khadeija, prophet Muhammad's wife and Aesha, also the prophet's wife and Fatimah, wife of Imam Ali Bin Abi Taleb ( Fatimah is also prophet Muhammad's daughter).

Qijja noted the number of women who played a great and crucial role in the conflict on power at the rule of the Abbasid Caliph Haroun al-Rashid between his two sons al-Ameen and al-Mamoun, noting a remarkable role of the Abbasid woman " Shajarut al-Durr" who contributed to the disappearance of one state and the emergence of another ( made a change in the rule from one system to another).

He explained that women were the dynamo in several historical events and their names are still famous until our present times, and gave an example on that " Sit al-Shaam" ( the lady of al-Shaam) who was the sister of Salah Eddine al-Ayoubi and "Sit al-Malik" and many others, noting women were behind 40% of the buildings built in Damascus under the Ayyubid era.

He indicated the abundant names of women throughout the Islamic history who worked in the medical fields from " al-Zaher" family who gave the names of 20 female doctors, besides many Arab women who contributing to enriching Arab legacy and culture like Khawla Bint al-Azwar, Tomader Bint Omar al-Sharid ( better known as al-Khansaa), Safia, Rabeaa, Sukeinah Bin al-Hussein, Aesha Bint Talha. He also cited two names of very important poetess " Aleya Bint al-Mahdi" and "Wallada Bint al-Mustakfi" from Andalusia ( Spain ) who were renowned poetess in the fifth Hijra century.
