A ministerial reshuffle expected in Syria
Syria, Politics, 5/1/2001

High ranking sources in Damascus expected in statements to the United Arab Emirates UAE daily al-Khaleij issued on Monday that a large-scale ministerial reshuffle will be held in Syria after the convening of the central committee of the Baath Party in May.

The sources stressed that the ministerial reshuffle will be vast and will target several current ministers and former ministers who had kept their ministerial posts in the two previous governments.

The sources explained that the intention is built towards increasing the number of the ministerial " bags" specified for the parties of the National Progressive Front besides several independent figures.

These sources noted the orientation existed in the leadership to merge certain similar ministries like the ministries of information and culture and the ministries of communications and transport as well as to establish new ministries in the forthcoming ministerial formation, especially a ministry for scientific research and another one for youths and sport.
