Turabi resumes contacts with South Sudan rebellions
Sudan, Politics, 5/1/2001

The Sudanese daily al-Share' al-Seyasi ( political street) said on Monday that the people's congress party which is led by Hassan al-Turabi, who is detained since the end of February, has resumed his contacts with the southern Sudan rebel movement in several European and African capitals through the party's activists in several capitals.

The paper added, according to well-informed sources that al-Mahjoub Abdul Salaam and Omar al-Turabi who signed the memorandum of understanding with the rebel movement on behalf of the party in Switzerland and being active in holding meetings with the leaderships of the rebels led by John Garang in the European capitals, while al-Turabi's deputy Ali al-Haj and Ibrahim al-Sanousi, two of the main leading figures of the people's congress are active in making contacts with the leadership of the rebellion movement in the Arab and African countries.

The sources explained that contacts of the People's Congress party leadership centered on two trends. The first focuses on continued dialogue with the rebel movement, a contact which ceased since the detention on al-Turabi. The second trend aims at explaining the dimensions of the arising conflict and the differences between this party and the Sudanese government and the attempts to make the Islamic and Arab states stand against it.
