European partnership agreement, to be signed soon

All studies and plans to modernize State sectors related to the Egyptian-European partnership agreement will be submitted to President Hosni Mubarak shortly to fix a date for signing the agreement after it was reviewed by the Cabinet.
Minister of Information Safwat Al-Sherif said that issues related to the Egyptian-European Partnership Agreement were reviewed at an expanded ministerial meeting which was held Sunday under Prime Minister Atef Ebeid.
The meeting discussed a number of reports on the modernization of the state and increasing the production sectors to produce competitive goods.
One report, from the Foreign Ministry, gave the final form of the agreement after it was reviewed.
Legal and language amendments were introduced and the agreement outlines executive steps to be followed.
A second report, from the Ministry of Industry, dealt with the ministry's plan to modernize and develop Egyptian industries, with special reference to the textiles and food industries and industries of the Public and private sectors with a view to augment their ability to compete with foreign products.
The Ministry of Economy also presented a report on results of talks held with the European negotiator on clarification sought by the Egyptian government.
The Prime Minister stressed the importance of completing plans to modernize the State which are the base for application as soon as the agreement is signed with the European Union.
The Ministries of Finance and Planning presented estimated allocations in the new budget in fiscal year 2001/2002 which amount to about half a billion pounds earmarked for development and modernization.
"Egyptian consultant offices will be set up to oversee the modernization process in collaboration with foreign consultant offices," the Minister of Information said.
