Mrs. Mubarak voices support for Palestinian women
Egypt, Culture, 4/30/2001

Egyptian First Lady Suzanne Mubarak said that social activities are atop of her priorities including the accessibility to books by setting up a number of libraries throughout the country in addition to caring for women affairs.

Statements to this end were made by Mrs. Mubarak during an interview aired by French TV-5 channel.

Asked about the first summit for Arab women held recently in Cairo and the role of the Palestinian women who are taking part in the Intifada, Mrs. Mubarak said the summit was not only intended to show sympathy with Palestinian women and kids during hard times, but also to support them.

"The Arab world calls for peace because if there is no real peace the land on which Arabs stand will be fragile," said Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak.

"Egypt signed a peace agreement but if a war erupted a few kilometers off home, there would not be peace at all," Mrs. Suzanne noted, highlighting the need to work for peace, development and better future for women, children and youth.

On position of the Egyptian woman in the Egyptian society, Mrs. Mubarak said that Egyptian women are doing a good job, citing the establishment of the National Council for Woman as an important step to defend the rights of women.

This council is designed to support woman's bid to have equal opportunity for work and eliminate poverty.
