Damascus: A meeting for Forums' representatives canceled
Syria, Politics, 4/30/2001
Well-informed sources in Damascus said that the Syrian specialized authorities on Saturday abrogated a meeting the representatives of intellectual and cultural forums in Syria were intending to convene on Sunday.
The well-informed sources explained that the meeting was canceled just one day before it was convened under the pretext that it is not licensed. but this does not prevent " a meeting " for the representatives of " a cup of coffee" to talk, the sources added.
However, the meeting which was called upon by "al-Attasi Forum" aims at three pillars. The most important of which are " Forums: the reality and the crisis, continuity," " the legal ways to legitimize the forums," and "proposals submitted by the representatives of the forums."
The authorities exclude, " al-Attasi forum" from measures it had taken against other forums existed in Syria. Just one week before, al-Attasi forum applied for a licensing to work legally.
It was obvious from this decision that officials in Syria give priority to the regional issues, especially following the Israeli raids at the Syrian radar position in Lebanon.
