Spain denies threats against Morocco
Morocco-Spain, Politics, 4/28/2001
Spain on Friday denied having made any threats of reprisal against Morocco following the failure to renew a fishery agreement between the European Union and the North African country.
Nobody in Madrid spoke of any reprisal in relations between Morocco and Spain, Pio Cabanillas, spokesman of the Spanish government told the press.
Relations between Morocco and Spain will always remain a priority for Spain, the official said at the end of a Spanish government council meeting.
Spanish press reports had quoted Spanish Premier, Jose Maria Aznar, as saying his government was planning retaliation against Morocco following the suspension of Fishery negotiations.
He had reportedly told Onda Cero private radio that the non-renewal of the fishery accord will have an impact on Morocco's relations with the European Union and with Spain.
Governmental sources in Madrid were quoted by Cinco Dias daily as saying that Aznar on Thursday instructed his cabinet to freeze or slow down to the maximum pending economic operations with Morocco, awaiting new instructions.
