Sudan and the kidnappers of the Ethiopian plane
Sudan-Ethiopia, Local, 4/28/2001
The Sudanese minister of information Ghazi Salah Eddine al-Atabani has said that his country does not intend to hand over the five high-jackers of the Ethiopian plane who surrendered themselves on Thursday evening to the Sudanese authorities.
In a statement to pressmen on Friday in al-Khartoum, al-Atabani added that the kidnappers of the Ethiopian plane will be tried fairly in Sudan and they can choose lawyers, noting that the high-jackers agreed to release the hostages in return for not being handed over to their countries.
On the other hand, the Ethiopian official radio on Friday announced that the Ethiopian government asked the Sudanese authorities to hand it the five " army officers students" who high-jacked the plane and took it to Sudan on Thursday.
A Sudanese high ranking official asked not to be identified told AFP that the "International law enables us to hand them to us. This is our right." The Ethiopian official added that the seizing operation is considered a crime and they ( the five Ethiopians ) should be brought before the court, but he did not explain whether should be tried in Ethiopia or in Sudan, SANA reported.
Worthy mentioning that the high-jacking process ended on Thursday evening at Khartoum airport, when the high-jackers released all the passengers before they surrendered themselves.
