Algeria does not allow Amnesty International to investigate in Tindouf camps
Algeria, Politics, 4/27/2001

Amnesty International Secretary general, Pierre Sane, said his human rights watchdog is willing to conduct investigation in the Tindouf Camps but is not allowed to do so by the Algerian government.

It is difficult to have access to the Tindouf camps because the Algerian government does not allow such access, Sane told Moroccan daily "L'Economiste."

Sane visited Morocco at the head of a high-level AI delegation to grant Amnesty International-Morocco the status of Amnesty International section, marking thus the achievement made by its members in the field of promotion and protection of human rights.

The AI secretary general said AI will dispatch a delegation to investigate in Tindouf the day it will be allowed to do so.

Tindouf, in south western Algeria, is the stronghold of the separatist polisario gang, claiming the independence of the Moroccan Sahara. Thousands of persons are forcibly detained in polisario-controlled camps in Tindouf where blatant human rights violations are committed.
