Al-Assad confers with Spanish foreign minister

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Thursday at the Damascus al-Shaab palace received the Spanish foreign minister Josep Pique and members of the accompanying delegation.

The meeting was attended by the Foreign minister Farouk al-Shara.

The Spanish minister conveyed to the President greetings of the Spanish King Juan Carlos and the President asked his guest to convey similar greetings to the Spanish King and to the Spanish people.

Talks dealt with the tense and critical conditions in the region, due to the Israeli policy and its aggressive acts.

The Spanish foreign minister said that his country called for a just and comprehensive peace in the region on the ground of UN resolutions and Madrid terms of reference and that it is ready to contribute to any work helps towards achieving peace.

The Spanish minister criticized the Israeli settlement policy and imposing the siege on the Palestinian area and the extra use of forces against the Palestinians as well as the aggression against the Syrian positions in Lebanon.

Al-Assad said that Syria's positive stand towards attaining peace has not changed and that the European Union can play an effective role to assert the "Madrid's terms of reference" and the international legitimacy resolutions in the work for the sake of peace.

Earlier in the day, the prime minister Muhammad Mustafa Miro received Pique and members of the accompanying delegation. The meeting was attended by the minister of state for foreign affairs and the Spanish ambassador in Damascus.

Talks dealt with means of developing co-operation relations between the two countries and means of strengthening them in various political, cultural and economic fields and increasing the volume of trade exchange and expanding the peace for joint investment so as to serve mutual benefits for Syria and Spain.

Talks also covered the deteriorated conditions in the escalation of events in the region due to Israel's continued aggressive policy and its occupation of the land and its crimes against the palestinian Intifada Pique left Damascus on Thursday following a visit to Damascus which lasted for two days. He was seen off by the Foreign minister farouk al-Shara, senior foreign ministry officials and the Spanish ambassador in Damascus.
