Yemen, Politics, 4/27/2001
The new Yemeni government chaired by Abdul Qader Bajmal has prepared a program in which it concentrated on fighting corruption and maintaining economic reforms. The Yemeni government, for the first time, listed an item dedicated for the civil society issues and the human rights.
Meantime,, and at the directives of the Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh, the Yemeni government decided to return back a factory for "soft drinks" to its original owners following 30 years of its nationalization.
In its session held on Tuesday, the Yemeni government set the new formula for its work program during the two coming years which is presumed to be submitted to the Parliament next week to be ratified in a vote of confidence on the 35- minister government.
Observers in Sanaa said it is ruled out that the new government will face problems in getting the confidence of the Parliament which is dominated by the ruling People's general congress party.
The program states to " continue implementing economic, financial and administrative reforms policies" already started in Yemen in 1995 at the request of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund with the aim of improving the economy. Among these reforms are " controlling the state's budget's deficiency, interests in non- oil revenues, issuing a taxation law on sales, reformation of the financial system and reconsidering the income taxation law."
Worthy mentioning deficit in the Yemeni government budget for this year is estimated at $ 87.7 million.
Moreover, under the title of " exterminating corruption," the new Yemeni government said it will implement practical programs to exterminate corruption, stressing that " under democracy and the freedom of expression an institutional system of vast social and cultural contributions will be established through which corruption can be eliminated.
Moreover, a Yemeni government official said that Yemen is intending to return back a factory for bottling " Canada Dry" drinks factory, which is the only soft drinks factory in the city to its owners after 30 years of its nationalization.
The official who works for the ministry of industry said that a technical committee is defining the origin of the factory before returning it back. Earlier the Marxist government in Southern Yemen nationalized the factory in 1972 and in 1990 the two parts of Yemen were unified. The official added it is expected to hand the factory back to its owners in the mid of May.
However, the Coca Cola" company has the right of the trade mark of " Canada Dry" in Yemen and also runs other factories to bottle drinks in Yemen.
