Syria-Israel, Politics, 4/25/2001
The committee in charge of supporting Syrian prisoners jailed by the Israelis in the occupied Golan and Palestine on Tuesday staged a sit-in in Damascus in solidarity with the Golan prisoners in the Israeli jails.
The participants raised posters of President Bashar al-Assad and chanted slogans in support of the Golan, Shebaa farms and Palestine. They, then went to the UN office in Damascus and handed the UN resident representative Tawfiq Bin Amara, a letter addressed to the UN secretary General Kofi Annan.
The letter contains a report explaining the conditions of the detainees of the people of the Golan in the Israeli prisons, and explained their sufferings because of the Israeli tortures.
The letter, on the other hand, demands an immediate release of the prisoners.
Earlier in the day, the participants in the sit-in handed the representative of the International Committee of the Red Cross ICRC in Damascus a letter addressed to the chairman of the ICRC in Geneva.
The letter included a detailed explanation of the tragic situation of the Syrian prisoners who suffer mentally and physically inside the Israeli jails.
