Regional-European Union, Economics, 4/24/2001
The foreign ministers of Egypt, Jordan, Morocco and Tunisia will hold a meeting in Rabat May 8-9 to probe means of coordinating the four states' stands regarding the European union, sources from the Egyptian foreign department said, MAP reported.
The meeting, to convene at the invitation of Morocco, will lay bases for cooperation and coordination of stands of the four countries which have signed bilateral partnership accords with the European Union, Egyptian vice-foreign in charge of cooperation with the EU, Jamal Bayoumi, said.
The meeting, he said, will explore means of consolidating Arab stands on negotiations with the union and promoting cultural and political dialogue in the frame of Arab-European association accords.
Moroccan minister of foreign affairs and cooperation, Mohamed Benaissa, had recently said Morocco would summon a meeting of the four countries having signed bilateral accords on the establishment of free trade areas (Egypt, Jordan Morocco and Tunisia) to discuss ways of setting up a, Arab free trade area.
Bayoumi said Arabs should conclude a new accord on joint Arab economic action to promote the overture of the Arab states on the world market. This overture also requires the establishment of an Arab free trade zone, the Egyptian official said, calling for the setting up of another free trade area at the level of the Arab-Mediterranean zone.
