Morocco, Culture, 4/24/2001
Moroccan Prime Minister, Abderrahmane Youssoufi, hailed Amnesty International-Morocco's becoming a full-fledged section of the organization.
Meeting in Rabat Monday a high-ranking AI delegation, led by Secretary general Pierre Sane, Youssoufi hailed the section-status granted to the AI-Morocco group as crowning the progress scored in matters of human rights and the group's work in an atmosphere of overture and democracy.
The prime minister surveyed the positive steps covered by Morocco mainly the improvement of the statute of the Human Rights Advisory Council and the efficient role it played in promoting the rule of the law in the kingdom.
Pierre Sane voiced appreciation for the progress scored by Morocco in human rights and for the positive debate on women currently taking place. He also expressed AI concern on a number of human rights dossiers.
As to AI action vis-a-vis the Palestinian people's tragedy, Sane said his organization has worked out a program on the promotion of human rights for peace and seeks to integrate this program in the negotiations between Palestinians and Israelis.
The visiting AI delegation attended Saturday a ceremony during which Amnesty International-Morocco has been granted the status of Amnesty International section to mark the achievement made by its members in the field of promotion and protection of human rights.
The delegation includes June Ray, Program Director of the Middle East/North Africa Program at the International Secretariat, Philip Luther, a researcher in the Middle East/North Africa Program, and Kamal Samari, senior press officer in the International Secretariat.
The visit winds up on April 24.
