Lebanese president confers with Greek party chief

Lebanese President Emil Lahoud on Monday received the secretary general of the Greek ruling PASOK party Kostas Scanda Lyds and members of the accompanying delegation.

Talks dealt with developments in the region, the stumbled ME peace process and Lebanon's stand regarding them and Lebanese- Greece relations and means of developing them in all fields.

The secretary general of the ruling party in Greece has stressed that his country will adopt continuous initiatives and will use all bilateral and European possibilities in order to attain peace in the region. He stressed Greece's backing to attain the demands of the Lebanese people to restoring back their occupied lands.

He indicated that these initiatives are based on UN resolutions, Madrid conference, honoring borders and international laws, the human rights and national sovereignty of states.

He explained that any solution to the Middle East question is linked to the return back of the Palestinian refugees to their homeland and attaining development and prosperity to all peoples of the region.

The Greek official said that President Lahoud asked for a more effective role to be played by the European Union in the region, noting " this is our very policy and we will work to fulfil his desire." He stressed that relations between the Lebanese and Greek peoples are not only at the political level, rather also based on developing social, economic and political ties.

The visiting delegation learned from President Lahoud to the importance of these relations which are expected to witness more progress during the visit to be held by President Lahoud to Greece in October this year, at the invitation of his Greek counterpart Kostas Stevani Polos.
